[Masanhoiwon‐gu | Attraction] National 3.15 Democratic Uprising Cemetery

National 3.15 Democratic Uprising Cemetery

‘The Republic of Korea may stand straight when the consciousness regarding patriotism is established properly.’ I visited National 3.15 Democratic Uprising Cemetery, a place to meet and commemorate the heroes of history, who facilitated the blooming of democracy.

01 | Visitor’s Report

This is National 3.15 Democratic Uprising Cemetery, which was formed to honor the souls of citizens and students who were sacrificed by participating in the demonstration held at Masan on April 11th to resist the illegal election held on March 15, 1960.

This is the ‘Door of Democracy’ which symbolized the bright future of the nation. This is the symbol of justice for achieving democracy and freedom by resisting against injustice and unlawfulness and of the spirit of sacrifice of the 3.15 movement, which opened the first door of democracy in Korea. It also symbolizes the bright future of the nation developing day by day, communication, and open spirit.

When coming up from the Door of Democracy, there is an altar to pay respects in a large area. This place is a commemorative place of honoring the honorable souls of the patriotic martyrs for the country, and a venue for historical education of democratization, to be conveyed to the descendants forever, which is a holy and sacred ground where everyone should come and pay respects with reverence.

The ‘Wall of Justice’ is a historical venue giving prominence to the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice and the field of resistance and fight on the day of erecting justice, and is also a space of eternity to succeed and sublimate the spirit of 3.15, along with the torchlight of democracy, lightening the souls and their righteousness. I could indirectly experience the fight of that day by viewing at a close distance.

How about paying respects with a reverential mind together? We are able to enjoy what we have today because of them, so let’s pay a silent tribute with appreciation and respect. Paying respects through online is available as well, so those interested may want to visit the website! (http://315.mpva.go.kr/ Website of National 3.15 Democratic Uprising Cemetery)

While going up each place, the Cemetery seemed quiet and it had well‐made paths.

A large‐sized demonstration protesting the illegal election occurred in Masan on March 15, 1960, which resulted in at least eight deaths and 72 gun injuries by the use of live ammunition by the police while suppressing the demonstration.
This demonstration led to the 4.18 Revolution, and a historical event occurred, which is the resignation of the former president Syngman Rhee.

As this place is where the patriots are asleep, I felt more reverential and my footsteps became heavier.

This place is Youyeong Bonganso. This is a place to honor the souls and to succeed the spirits.

A portrait is placed inside the Youyeong Bonganso. I could see the portrait from far away. I was able to deeply think of the spirit of sacrifice and patriotism once again.

You can take a view of Changwon, in addition to the national cemetery, inside Youyeong Bonganso. My heart felt open by the open space!/

There is also the 3.15 Memorial Hall. I really recommend those coming with children or wishing to know more historical facts to visit this place. It would be better to look around the Cemetery after viewing the Memorial Hall.

This Exhibition Hall is divided into the First Exhibition Room, Second Exhibition Room, and Children’s Experience Center, and there is a video room available as well.

Unlike the Democratic Uprising Cemetery, the Memorial Hall is closed on Mondays, so please take note of this fact when you visit!
